Born the year his parents opened a slippers making factory, Stewart Houlgrave, founder of Hotter Comfort Concept has always had the desire to design and create shoes as comfortable as slippers. By the early 1990s he reached a significant turning point-the launch of Hotter Comfort Concept. In 1959 his father, Thomas Houlgrave, decides to use the experience he'd gained at the Skelmersdale shoe company to invest time, money and energy in setting up his own business to manufacture slippers. With the support of his mother, Harriet, he sets up Beaconsfield Footware. In 1985, Stewart Houlgrave had made shoes, polished shoes, been on the road selling shoes but his overriding passion is designing shoes. He has travelled thousands of miles each year in his quest to find ways to design and make shoes that are as comfortable as slippers. In 1992, he discovered the lightness, comfort and shock absorbing qualities of a material called polyurethane. He carefully designed lots more comfort features into these shoes to make them look stylish...thus, the Hotter Concept was born. In 1997 alongside comfort and design, quality is crucial. Thus, it invested in the "Rolls Royce" of shoe making machines and bought the first of its four DESMA machines. Production steps up to meet the demand for comfy shoes that is coming through its brand new 20 seater call centre. In 1999 ,its 40th year, the founder celebrates with long servers who have worked at Hotter for over 20 years and sales of shoes in Garden centres began after he visited one near his home. In 2002, he decided to test Hotter shoes on the high street opening its first store in South Port. The calendar Girls visits the factory to see how their favorite footwear is made and they were persuaded to pose wearing nothing but Hotter Shoes to raise money for leukaemia research. In 2008, hundreds of Hotter fans join with the Calendar Girls in South Port Chester and Bournemouth to raise over £ 50,000 for Leukaemia Research. In 2015, Hotter was awarded a Queen's award for enterprise and named Uk Manufacturer Of The Year!
